DAPITAN CITY - The Palarong Pambansa 2011 opens today with a motorcade along Sunset Boulevard showing the different banners of seventeen participating regions of the Philippine archipelago.

Delegations of more than ten thousand athletes will compete in seventeen events in the week-long Palaro starting tomorrow, May 9 and will culminate on May 14.

An opening ceremony followed at the Jose Rizal Memorial State University Sports Complex hosted by actor and multi-awarded athlete himself, Richard Gomez and Pia Cayetano. Special guest is Vice President Jejomar Binay who declared the official opening of the Palarong Pambansa.

Thousands of delegations composed of athletes, trainers and coaches from the National Capital Region (NCR), Region 4-A CALABARZON, Region 3 Central Luzon, Region 10 Northern Mindanao, CARAA, CARGA, Region 4B MIMAROPA, Region 5 Bicol Region, Region 11 Davao Region, Region 6 Western Visayas, Region 1 Ilocos Region, Region 8 Eastern Visayas, Region 9 Zamboanga Peninsula, Region 7 Central Visayas, ARMM, Region 2 Cagayan Valley and Region 12 Central Mindanao, Department of Education officials, city officials, parents and guests filled the complex until after the display of fantastic fireworks signalling the opening of a new day tomorrow for the first event to be staged.

The events for this year’s Palaro are: archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, sipa, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball and the special events./*
