GIANT WHALES LANDED ASHORE

Cadiz has become famous worldwide when a dozen of giant whales landed ashore on May 7, 1967 at the Villa Barbas II, Zone 2. A bandwagon of foreign national and local journalists, scientists and researchers, including photographers, thronged to the shoreline to take footages and data of the almost dying 12 large mammals.

CADIZ: CHARTERED CITY

Exactly eight days after the historic landing of the 12 whales in Cadiz shoreline, the Republic Act No. 4894, authored by Congressman Armando C. Gustilo, declaring Cadiz as Chartered City in Negros Occidental, was signed by President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos on May 15, 1967. The inauguration took place on July 4, 1967.

OFFICIAL SEAL: WHALE IMPRINT

As the City of Whales, the Cadiz City emblazoned the whale image in its Official Seal, with the 22 sunrays that represent the City’s 22 barangays. The yellow color in the open area signifies peace, order and prosperity. The Official Seal generally portrays the historic landing of the 12 giant whales in Cadiz shoreline on May 7, 1967.

PIRATES INVADED CADIZ

The striving Cadiz City suffered of severe damages when a band of notorious pirates led by Isabelo Montemayor, surprisingly attacked the powerless Cadiz on the tranquility of December 31, 1968. Chief of Police Norberto Tongoy was killed in action when he tried to repel the invading forces.

DINAGSA FESTIVAL

1972 was the birth of Ati-Atihan Festival. It had become world-famous when its all-day-long street dance had attracted more local and international tourists all through the years. After 30 years of celebrating the pageantry, the Festival was renamed into “Dinagsa Festival” in 2002. The term “Dinagsa” literally refers to the sudden surging of school of fish ashore and/ or to the 12 whales that landed in Cadiz shoreline on May 7, 1967. It bashes off every 3rd week of January. The Festival is also a spectacular feast for the Patron Saint Senior Sto. Nino de Cadiz.

PNU – CADIZ

The Philippine Normal College (PNU) Negros Occidental Branch, now the Philippine Normal University, is set in Cadiz City on July 1968 by virtue of the Republic Act NO. 4242 authored by Congressman Armando C. Gustilo. Its first director was Dominador Medado. The PNC became a university on December 26, 1991, thru the Republic Act NO.7168. Dr. Jean Figueroa is the OIC - Executive Director.

GRETCHEN SEA MISHAP

On February 18, 1996, ML Gretchen, a ferry boat that traversed Cadiz to Bantayan island in Cebu and vice versa, perturbed the City when it sunk amid the break of dawn. Docked in several meters away from the wharf due to low tide, the boat was hit by the strong wind and big waves, and capsized, killing about 51 passengers, mostly children. It caught the media limelight worldwide. In fact, the foreign and national daily broadsheets run the mishap in their front pages as local and international humanitarian aids flowed in and the rescue and search operations on the ill-fated ferry boat continued.

NAT’L BEST ATHLETES LIVE IN CADIZ

Cadiz City (Western Visayas) delegates made a historic leap when they edged out its strong National Capital Region (NCR) contenders during the week - long Palaro Pambansa 2001 in Naga City. Yenny Mahilum and BJ Dolorosa were declared Best Athletes and Most Bemedalled National Athletes in track and field and boxing categories, respectively. They were cited for their par excellent performance during the annual athletic and cultural meet.
