In order to facilitate an athletic competition for pupils with disability involving other SPED schools within the province as a sequel of 1st Paralympiada in 1995, the city’s Department of Education (Dep-ed) hosted the 9th Provincial Paralympiada 2011 at Dr. VFGMNHS in celebration with the 37th Dinagsa Festival last January 28, 2011.

The provincial paralympiada with a theme of “Ang Kapasanan ay hindi Hadlang sa Kaunlaran”, was participated by more than 500 special children and officiating teams from Bacolod City SPED Center, Silay City SPED Center, La Carlota City SPED Center, Cadiz City SPED Center and San Carlos City. Participants were categorized into three: children with hearing impaired, visually impaired and mentally challenge or mentally retarded children.

Editha Negosa, chairman of Paralympiada Committee said that various activities in the field of sports, cultural and parlor games were lined up to enhance and upgrade the competence and skills of the special children or persons with disabilities as part of their trainings in civic, athletics and recreational activities.

The activities were 50M run, 100 and 200 meter dash for boys and girls, bocce, goal ball and volleyball, cultural contest such as Fantasy modeling, vocal solo, playing any musical instruments, folkdance, parlor games and pig hunting.

Mayor Patrick Escalante delivered his message and declared the opening of the sports activity at the opening rites of the competition.

The pig hunting, make up contest, banana eating and planting straw contest joined by the blind children, deaf & mute or hearing impaired and mentally retarded from each delegation marked the funniest events of the day.

Among those who attended the events were City Mayor Patrick Escalante, Vice Mayor Samson Mirhan, SPED Training Center Principal Noami Cabras, Dep-ed officials, Arlene Bermejo, Dr. VFGMNHS Principal Wilfredo Mijares, officials of different delegations and athletes./*
