Known for being disciplined and determined in pressing on towards the goal and gold, the Cadiznon sports competitors had once more earned medals in the taekwondo and chess tournaments in the recently-concluded Panaad sa Negros Festival 2009.

Be it a game of a combined combat technique and self-defense or a game on a square checquered chessboard, the sportspersons of the city’s taekwondo and chess teams had proven their prowess in said sports by garnering three (3) gold medals, four (4) silver and four (4) bronze for taekwondo and two (2) silver for chess.

In taekwondo, Chryss Ryan Sanes, Novemae Delos Santos and Nesjoy Abarquez earned gold in Group 1 (under 11 years old), Group 5 (Under 12 years old), and Welter Weight Divisions individually; Zoe Marie Bacomo, Frenzet Meliz Sumugat, Elexis John Oyad and Michelle Ann Roncesvalles got silver in Groups 1 and 4, Welter and Fin Weight Divisions correspondingly; and Justine Constantino, Pauline Roane Morales, Rommel Tabia, Jr. and Marijo So obtained bronze in Groups 2 and 4 and Bantam Divisions separately.

In chess, with Ms. Pressyl Paguntalan as the coach, on the other hand, Kristel Shayne Herrera of SPED Training Center reaped a silver medal in the individual under 13 girls category and ranked 5th runner up in team category with partner Pearlene Calibo who is also from SPED while Carissa Marie Diaz and Alyanna Sofia Benedicto placed 13th runner up in the same category. Cadiz A team under 13 boys category, composed of Jan Danielle Magalona and Noel Moses Batislaon of PNU, received silver medal for ranking 1st runner up, outperforming more than a hundred players coming from the rest of the 12 cities and 19 municipalities in Negros Occidental.

Furthermore, SPEDians Justin Cruta and Karl Mitchell Gendrala placed 6th runner up while Cygeorge Hidalgo, Nathan Skye Ditching, Frenz Adrian Sarabia and Vincent Paul Castor, all from SPED Training Center, placed 15th runner up. For the under 18 boys and girls categories respectively, Kurt Michael Gendrala of SPED High School and partner Jubert Paul Merabe of Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial National High School placed 7th runner up, while Arlene Abonales of Special Science and Technology Class (SSTC) and Jireh Joan Tolentino of SPED High School positioned to 9th runner up./*
