In celebration with the 37th National Dental Health Month aimed to increase the awareness of Filipinos on the importance of having a good oral hygiene, the City Health Office led by Dr. Jeffrey Guanzon, city dentist inducted feeding program, lectures, mass hand washing and tooth brushing drills at CHO ground last February 22, 2011.

The activity which has a theme “Ngipin Kayamanan Pagkasira Huwag Hayaan, Dentistang Mapagkalinga, Handa kang Gabayan” was jointly participated by more than 50 parents and day care children of Barangays 1, 2 ,3 and kindergarten pupils from Cadiz East Elementary School.

Dr. Frenchie Mae Londres Gebusion, OIC City Health Officer gave her opening remarks and Dr. Jeffrey Guanzon lectured on the essentials on oral health care package including deworming for pregnant women, techniques of good tooth brushing and hand washing for pre-school children and attendee parents.

Dr. Guanzon stressed the importance of proper hand washing skills, which can reduce the incidence of diarrheal disease by 47 percent and respiratory disease by 30 percent among school children. He added that “the fact that about 97 percent of Filipino children suffer from dental caries or tooth decay and yet, a simple school-based tooth brushing drill could reduce its incidence by as much as half.”

Pre-test and post-test were also given to selected parents to assess the improvement in their knowledge and attitude as a result of the oral health lecture. A photo exhibit regarding oral health lecture drive and essential health care package for schoolchildren was also launched at the CHO.

The City Health Office has also conducted orientation on Basic Oral Health Care to a more than 262 kids, 202 pregnant woman, day care workers, kindergarten teachers, midwives for school based tooth brushing and hand washing drills in Barangays Daga, Luna, Caduhaan, Burgos, Andres Bonifacio ,Sicaba,Tinampaan, Mabini, Cabahug and Tiglawigan.

Dr. Guanzon also suggested that the city government should institutionalize the implementation of “essential health care package for school children” with formal tie-ups between different governments offices, considering that at P25.00 per child per year, the package is a very cost-effective way of reducing childhood diseases.

Among those who supported the activity were personnel from the CHO, City Information Office, City General Services Office, City Vice Mayor’s Office, day cCITYare workers, health workers, nurses, teachers and parents./*
